Re: the conversation with Crouch!Moody, I’ve spent all week writing about him, so I have thoughts!
Why he told them to be Aurors – I think that was 100% part of his cover. It would be a very Moody thing to do, encouraging promising recruits to become Aurors. And by flattering then, he wins their trust. It was all part of the act.
Re, his conversation with Dumbledore about the Trio – that absolutely happened. Moody was brought by Dumbledore to Hogwarts that year for the express purpose of protecting Harry. Between the Dark Mark’s appearance, Pettigrew’s escape, Harry’s dream about Babymort, and the ongoing estrangement between Albus and Snape… Dumbledore needed his friend and ally onsite for the year. It makes perfect sense he’d tell Moody about the Trio, including how they are, what they’re capable of, and their tendency to nose into people’s business. Once Harry’s name came out of the Goblet, then Dumbledore would’ve made extra sure Moody was caught up to speed on Harry’s behavior.
