Great podcast, as always and I’m looking forward to the third installment. I especially liked the reference to Star Trek’s “The Inner Light”— one of the best episodes of Star Trek: the Next Generation. (It was, among other things, the one Patrick Stewart listed as his favorite.) The idea of these vivid illusions being indistinguishable from real life connects back to Dumbledore’s classic line: “Of course this is happening in your head, but why on earth should that mean it is not real?” If you don’t mind me linking to another podcast, that episode and its connections to Potter were discussed extensively on this Potterversity episode on Trek-Potter connections.
Thanks Louise, glad you enjoyed it!
I’m not a Trekkie, but will definitely file this away should we ever get around to a Trek/Potter crossover.
I think the lake in the cave is Draught of Living Death, just very diluted. Fortunately, homeopathy works because magic?
Overall, the cave situation makes me think of hacking together a video-game scenario: Voldemort keeps adding kludges to cover specific loopholes/exploits, ultimately leading to a complicated mess where it’s not clear what each bit is actually doing anymore, and trying to change anything (to fix/tidy up) would just make the whole thing fall apart.

Tying in with the previous installment as well, maybe the reason aging/youthening(?) potions aren’t used more is that the required dose grows exponentially. E.g. each additional year requires doubling the dosage, so ageing/de-ageing by any more than a few years means drinking an impossible amount.
Oh, I really like your ageing theory! Exponential growth for the win… it would totally make sense that the dosage would be calculated on a logarithmic scale rather than a linear one.
And good point about Voldemort’s cave as well… Though with all of his hacks and fixes, you’d think the two-people-in-a-boat loophole would’ve been more thoroughly considered. *shrug*
