Here’s a theory: maybe Lockhart remembers more than he lets on.
After all, he spent the previous however-many-years pretending to be an adventuring author, but he knows he won’t be able to get away with that anymore (and might even have to answer for his crimes as Sam suggests). So why not a new shtick as a recovering amnesiac?
He gets waited on hand-and-foot, and still gets to spend most of his day reading/answering fanmail. He’s in heaven.
Wow, I’m amazed I haven’t come across that theory about Lockhart before, because it’s totally plausible!
I choose to believe that Lockhart’s memory is totally gone, just because I want some comeuppance for him. But I’ve nothing to prove it over your theory!
Which means during their whole interaction, he’s mentally chanting “Don’t strangle the ginger one; it’ll give me away. Don’t strangle…”
After all, Harry and Ron (accidentally) foiled another escape attempt.
